TEHRAN (IQNA) – A two-day international seminar on “Quranic Studies in the Subcontinent of 20th Century” is underway in Aligarh, India’s Uttar Pradesh.

It has been organized by the Department of Sunni Theology, the Aligarh Muslim University.

AMU Vice Chancellor, Prof Tariq Mansoor said at the seminar that in order to understand any text, it is necessary to know its background and the intention of the writer or the speaker.

In the same way, it is essential to understand the verses of holy Quran and their context before considering its interpretations and related sciences, he said.

He added that all scientific inventions or statements of scientists cannot be referred to as Quranic injunctions because science is subject to change while the holy Quran is beyond any change, modification, or deletion.

He said Aligarh Muslim University has the distinction of imparting education both in science and technology and oriental studies and has the oldest Faculty of Theology.

In his opening remarks, while welcoming the guests, Prof. Tawqir Alam Falahi, Dean, Faculty of Theology said that the Quran is a book of guidance and a book of revelation as well. Apart from Muslim scholars, a number of orientalists have also served in Quranic studies in their own way and this seminar aims at bringing forth their services to the understanding of the Quran.

Delivering a keynote address, Prof. Muhammad Saud Alam Qasmi gave a brief introduction to Indian commentators and translators while describing the historical evolution of translation and interpretation of the Holy Quran. He said the services of Allama Farahi, Ehsanullah Abbasi and Syed Ali Naqi Naqvi among AMU teachers are of extraordinary importance.

The chief guest, Mufti Mohammad Rashid Azmi, Deputy Rector of Darul Uloom Deoband mentioned the services of the translators and commentators of the Quran of the twentieth century and underscored the distinctions and main features of the translations and interpretations of Shaikh Al-Hind Maulana Mahmood Hasan and Maulana Ashraf Ali Thanvi. Described In the same way, he also discussed the significance of interpretations of Allama Hameeduddin Farahi, Maulana Ashraf Ali Thanvi and Mufti Saeed Ahmad Palanpuri.

The guest of honor, Prof. Iqtidar Muhammad Khan, Chairman, Department of Islamic Studies, Jamia Millia Islamia urged people to obey the Quranic commandments with complete submission as it was the only way to achieve success in life and hereafter.

The guest of honor, Maulana Syed Kalbe Jawwad, General Secretary, Majlis Ulema-e-Hind, spoke on the uniqueness of the Quran, saying that the challenge remains forever to bring even a similar verse. He said that the Quran is the book of peace, and this is why the Quran described the treaty of Hudaibiyah as a victory, while it did not call any war a victory.

The program director, Prof. Muhammad Habibullah welcomed the guests and read out the message of the Rector of Darul Uloom Deoband, Mufti Abul Qasim Nomani.

Seminar Convenor, Professor Muhammad Saleem Qasmi extended the vote of thanks and Deputy Convenor, Professor Muhammad Rashid conducted the seminar.
